The idea of an attractive woman with a nerdy guy is the premise for the new movie “She’s Out of My League,” starring Jay Baruchel.
“She’s Out of My League” is a romantic comedy about Kirk Kettner (Baruchel), a self-conscious nerd who ends up dating Molly (Alice Eve), a girl that, in Kirk’s mind, is unattainable because of her good looks. Kirk’s friends make him feel insecure about his new relationship and he begins to question how Molly can go for a guy like him.
The “nerd gets the girl” comedy, is nothing new and has been done since the 80s, but “She’s Out of My League” could become a cult classic.
“It could hit a nerve,” Baruchel said. “It will be one of those movies passed around on DVD a lot. I think it’s a hell of a way to spend two hours.”
This is this is the first time Canadian Baruchel is taking a lead role in an American feature film. He has played supporting actors in movies like “Knocked Up,” “Tropic Thunder,” “Fan Boys” and TV shows like “Numb3rs” and “Undeclared.” He is confident in his abilities, however, having played leads in Canadian independent films.
“I know what it was to carry a movie on my shoulders. I was kinda groomed for it.,” Baruchel said.
English actress Alice Eve plays Molly. Eve is best known for her work in the 2009 film “Crossing Over” and has been in various TV shows in England.
“She’s Out of My League” is the first feature film directed by Jim Field Smith, a veteran of British television.
Baruchel explained what it was like working with Smith.
“He came from sketch comedy in England and has that dry English humor. He’s wired a certain way,” he said. “He let us play with our characters all the way and allowed me to ad-lib.”
Some scenes in “She’s Out of My League” were completely improvised by the actors.
Although most of the roles Barchuel takes up are the down-on-his-luck dweeb type, he is not completely like the characters he plays.
“I’m a lot crazier than people know,” Barchuel said, “it’s a close match but not me 100 percent.”
“She’s Out of My League” opens March 12 and also stars Krysten Ritter, Mike Vogel, Nate Torrence, Lindsay Sloane and Geoff Stults.
