Once in a while there is something refreshing that helps to motivate people to continue to refine their craft. Patrick Wise, a Master of Arts student studying painting, recently received motivation and honor to keep refining his craft.
Wise took third place as one of the three scholarship recipients in the 2010 Annual Detroit Artist Market Scholarship and Exhibition.
According to the DAM Web site, an open invitation was given to WSU students to submit art and concluded with studio visits to the finalists.
Awards and finalists were chosen for their subject matter, originality and exceptional art work. Recipients of the John F. Korachis Scholarship Awards were chosen by the DAM scholarship and exhibition committee.
John F. Korachis, exhibition chair and DAM board member, said Wise was chosen because of his determination to learn.
“Patrick really studies philosophy and history. That is what is important. This is how I evaluated him. His love for knowledge, truth and education is extraordinary,” Korachis said.
Wise said he strives to find the fleeting moments in everyday life experiences and capture them in his art. His inspiration comes from an interpretation and presentation of mass images.
“I’m inspired by ideas, something that’s going to engage you and make you stop and enter into the painting. Too often people are bombarded with mass images when you go out in the world,” Wise said. “I would like to slow down your seeing when you look at my paintings and enjoy what you’re looking at, a pause from your busy life.”
One of his paintings, “Birthday,” depicts a man blowing out candles on what appears to be a birthday cake.
All three of the award-winning paintings, two of which are named after his wife, Marjorie, are oil on canvas, and hang in the gallery of the DAM.
Wise received praise as well from Margi Weir, assistant professor of painting and drawing at WSU’s James P. Duffy School of Art and Art History.
“He is an energetic and capable painter who shows great promise. I am delighted that the judges at the Detroit Artist Market recognized his talent and potential,” she said.
The Detroit Artists Market will feature the work of Wise and the other eight finalists until April 17.
