As students protested cuts to higher education on March 4 in Detroit, Wayne State Student Senate members were in Lansing telling legislators why higher education funding is so important.

WSU’s Student Senate Parliamentarian Michael Sullivan and President James Gale spoke at Michigan State University at a public hearing before the House Appropriations Subcommittee on Higher Education.

Gale’s speech focused on the importance of investing in Tech Town — science and research — while Sullivan emphasized education as Michigan’s hope toward a stable economy.

“I think the main point of my speech was that in order for Michigan to turn around and to diversify our economy, we need to invest in educating our work force,” Sullivan said. “I think it’s more important than ever to spend money on higher education.”

Following the senate member’s speeches, legislators asked questions; Sullivan said they were well prepared to answer them.

“It was evident that we did our homework, and we were able to provide real thought-out answers,” he said.

The meeting allowed the senate to explain to legislators the financial burdens of higher education for students in Michigan. Gale said legislators were receptive to their comments.
“They listened to what we had to say,” Gale said. “It was a good experience.”
