Wayne State students looking to get a unique flavor of Detroit needed to look no further than campus.

The Taste of Detroit, held Nov. 24 at Ghafari Hall, gave cultural information about Mexicantown, Greektown, Corktown and Midtown.

Students received packets that included maps, restaurant lists, location of churches and other resources found in every part of the city. Giving dorm residents an awareness of what Detroit offers is a goal of the university, as well as dorm advisors who helped organize the event.

“Resident advisors are really trying to make sure people are making a connection with each other and Detroit,” said Audra Kovalchuk, associate dean of Students for Residence Life.

Alexis D’Angelo, who graduated from WSU in 2008 as an Urban Studies major, presented the event. D’Angelo is heavily involved in the Alternative Spring Break Detroit program.

“It is so important to Alexis to get people out into the city,” Kovalchuk said.

Taste of Detroit featured various foods from the four ethnic neighborhoods. Presentations were given on the history and culture of each, encouraging students to take that knowledge of Detroit and experience the city for themselves.

Additonal Taste of Detroit packets can be found in the Office of Housing and Residential Life in Room 598 of the Student Center.
