Wayne State catcher Michael Wiseman was announced as one of 12 recipients of the Spring GLIAC Commissioner’s Award, given to student-athletes who excel both on and off the field.

The award is handed out to a dozen student-athletes following the fall, winter and spring sports seasons.

Wiseman, a redshirt sophomore, hit .307 with six homers and 35 RBIs. He also started 49 games behind the plate and led the league in runners caught stealing (27). He was also named to the All-GLIAC First Team and All-Midwest Region Second Team.

Swimming

Athletics Director Rob Fournier announced the 2008-09 EDS/Student-Athletes of the Year.
Swimmers Ashley St. Andrew and Sean Smith took home the honors, which are based on academic, athletic and community service accomplishments.

St. Andrew and Smith both won two individual national titles at the NCAA Championship: St. Andrew finished first in the 500 and 1,000 free, while Smith won the 200 backstroke and was a member of the winning 400 medley relay team.

Football

Former Wayne State defensive lineman Andrew Bates was inducted into the 2009 National Football Foundation Hampshire Honor Society.

All college football players — regardless of division — are eligible if they had a GPA of 3.2 or higher.

Previous WSU inductees include Ryan Oshnock (2007) and Frank Lietke (2008).

The Rundown is compiled by Karl Henkel, TSE sports editor, who can be reached at se.southend@gmail.com.
