What happened
Joique Bell has set many records in his three-plus seasons at Wayne State. On Oct. 3, he added his name to another record — most touchdowns in a game and most rushing touchdowns (5) in team history — as WSU upset Ashland 47-40.
More on Bell
Bell rushed for 272 yards and five touchdowns, but the most important score was his sixth, a 45-yard touchdown reception with 30 seconds remaining in the fourth quarter. It was the exclamation point on a 13-point come-from-behind victory; Ashland led 33-20 at halftime.
Quarterback Mickey Mohner hooked up with Bell at midfield with a pass completion. Bell made the catch, was hit initially, but broke free of a tackle on more than one occasion for the score.
“This was one of the greatest comebacks of my career,” Bell said. “Huge win.”
Offenses fly
Overall, Ashland 513 yards of total offense. The Warriors accumulated 441 of their own.
Defense holds in second half
The defensive plays of the game happened at the beginning of the fourth quarter, with the score all knotted up at 33. The Wayne State defense displayed a Steel Curtain-like stand, reminiscent to that of the Pittsburgh Steelers of the 1970s. WSU (5-1, 4-1 GLIAC) stopped Ashland (3-3, 3-2 GLIAC) three straight times on the 1-yard line and forced a turnover on downs.
Extra defense
Defensively, WSU rallied behind first-year middle linebacker Nick Thomas, who filled up the stat sheet with 24 tackles.
Penalties galore
There were 18 penalties called on both teams, 11 of which went against WSU. There were also a handful of offsetting personal fouls.
