The student body at Wayne State expanded this fall, as the university saw its largest enrollment since 2004.
The increase may seem odd due to the economic decline, however according to Howard Shapiro, associate vice president for undergraduate programs and general education, there are several reason why WSU is thriving.
“First and foremost are highly motivated students who realize that a college education continues to be a primary pathway to career success, particularly in challenging economic times,” Shapiro said in a press release. “More students are re-enrolling and many are taking additional courses to complete their degree requirements sooner. To help ensure that they get that opportunity, the WSU Board of Governors has initiated several financial aid incentives, which include doubling the availability of need-based scholarship funds.”
It's thanks to the 5% increase in freshman and new transfer students and the 6.6% increase in graduate students that wayne state can accredit this rise.
Total enrollment last year was 31,025 and this year it has escalated to 31,786, an increase of 761 students. This is the second largest increase WSU has seen in a dozen years.
