Wayne State’s Career Services and Women of Wayne Alumni Association are hosting weeklong events and workshops to help students and alumni learn career planning and job search strategies, said Internship Coordinator for Career Services Kimberly Streeter.
“A weeklong event will give more magnitude to the variety of services and activities that we offer to our students and alumni, and offer a response to the current job market climate in the Detroit area,” Streeter said.
Sponsored by Career Services and Women of Wayne Alumni Association, the workshops will be held in the Student Center’s Hilberry A from March 23-26.
Topics vary from acquiring knowledgeable skills, U.S. State Career information, DTE Energy careers, job search skills, an academic seminar, and information on the non-profit job market.
Some programs will be catered towards undergraduate students and parents; others towards alumni. Students who use career services have greater success, Streeter said.
“The probability of career success is greater among students that regularly attend career related events and utilize their career center and academic resources frequently,” Streeter said.
Monday’s programs will start with a presentation by Department of State representative and Diplomat in Residence, Adrienne O’Neal, on U.S. State careers. O’Neal said the Department of State is looking for applicants in the Foreign Services program.
Applicants must choose a career field within five choices; political, economic and counselor affairs, and public diplomacy and management. After taking an exam in that field, passing applicants will be hired to work in one of 265 U.S. Embassies.
Foreign language capabilities are not required. There are a few critically needed languages, including Mandarin, Arabic and Russian.
O’Neal said she is coming to Wayne State to get more applications from this diversified regional area.
“Wayne State is perfect with a diverse population that’s very much aware of global issues,” she said.
O’Neal will talk about necessary steps to apply for careers, and upcoming internships and deadlines. Students can ask questions at the end of sessions, Streeter said. They should also bring a résumé.
“Students are encouraged to bring a resume as well because these events are prime opportunities for networking,” she said.
